Also, I personally don’t think there’s anything “bad-ass” about cheating. But really, he would do the same thing in a quiet suburb, and it’s painfully clear. The only reason, I believe, that the movie sets up this elaborate idea of an island-haven full of scummy dirtbags is so that Snake can romp around killing people and we won’t feel bad rooting for him. He would kill anybody just to get a mild kick, and do so with barely any interesting dialogue. Seriously – it seems to be his only interest. Where Max Payne and the Punisher fight lowly thugs and worthless gangsters to avenge the deaths of family, Snake seems only interested in watching the world suffer. Snake Plissken is the least likable “bad-ass” hero I’ve ever seen. So, everything seemed to add up to what would be an enjoyable experience. Also, I’m a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid videogame series, which its main character, Solid Snake, is said to be based off Snake Plissken, the lead from the Escape films. I love Kurt Russell, and his well-done one-vs-all duties in Soldier seemed to tell me he was up to the task of making this one great. I’ve always had a soft spot for one-vs-all stories featuring bad-ass heroes, like the Punisher, Max Payne, Taken, and of course Die Hard. was shooting for a level of coolness and bad-ass-ness with this setting and lead character, it just ended up giving me an angry level of annoyance, and it’s mainly because of this lead character. Maybe a dystopian Punisher comic? Whatever it may have been, I definitely expected a level of “cool” or “bad-ass”, because what other kind of enjoyability could you ask for from a poster like this? While it’s clear how Escape from L.A. I don’t know what I was expecting from this.
